WHAT ARE HEARING AIDS?

Hearing aids (sometimes known as hearing instruments) are sound-amplifying devices intended to help people with hearing impairments.

Most hearing aids have a microphone that picks up sound, amplifier circuitry that makes the sound louder, a small loudspeaker (receiver) that transmits the amplified sound into the ear canal, and batteries to power the electronic components.

Many contemporary hearing aids may connect wirelessly to landline phones, cell phones, MP3 players, and televisions. Each firm has its own line to complement its specific hearing instrument. The technology is available at most pricing points for hearing aids.

What is the difference between analog and digital hearing aids?

  1. Convert sound into electrical impulses, which are amplified and transmitted to the hearing aid’s earphone.
  2. Most of these types of hearing aids have a single program that remains the same in all listening circumstances.
  3. Make noises louder, but may not distinguish between them. i.e., enhance all sounds (such as speech and noise) in the same way.
  4. This type of instrument is often large in size.
  5. It is available from only a few manufacturers.
  1. Digital hearing aids use a tiny computer to process sound which makes it possible for the device to be programmed to suit your particular type and ‘shape’ of hearing loss
  2. Some digital aids can be pre-programmed for different listening settings based on your lifestyle, while others adjust automatically.
  3. Suppress background noise to make speech easier to hear and interpret, particularly in busy surroundings.
  4. Possibility of wireless, water-proof, and almost invisible
  5. Available from all hearing aid manufacturers.
